Surface preparation pricing
Our surface preparation price range is $1–$5 per square foot. This is the surface preparation rate, not a price for tile removal or the complete replacement installation.
Preparing for the replacement tile
When the first row of wall tile needs support, we use a ledger board. We follow the product instructions for the mortar used in the new installation.
For waterproof membrane work, our equipment includes a wet film thickness gauge to check the thickness while the material is wet.

Check floodplain requirements before starting
We check the city’s flood map before starting. For a property in a mapped flood-hazard area, Cape Girardeau requires a floodplain development permit before a building is added to or altered.
We work under Cape Girardeau’s residential construction requirements, which currently follow the 2015 International One- and Two-Family Residential Code.

The Fix, Done Right
Our crew does the work, checks it, and leaves the site clean. You see everything we did.
Some of what that looks like in the field:
- Install movement joints in wet-area tile work in accordance with the applicable TCNA method.
- Check shower-wall studs with a level and correct out-of-plane framing before installing backerboard.

Straight Answers to Common Questions
Is it okay to lay tile directly on concrete?
Yes, provided the concrete is clean, dry, flat, and free of cracks or coatings. Test for moisture and level; grind high spots and fill lows. Apply a primer or membrane if recommended by the thinset manufacturer before setting tile.
What are common tile installation mistakes?
Frequent errors include skipping proper surface prep, using the wrong mortar, inadequate waterproofing in showers, and failing to check for square or level. Poor joint spacing and insufficient curing time before grouting also lead to failures.
How much is a tiler's day rate?
Daily rates for professional tilers commonly range from several hundred dollars, depending on experience and location. Most residential jobs are bid per square foot rather than daily, so day-rate quotes are less common unless the scope is small or time-based.
