Setting tile and checking mortar coverage
We burn thinset onto the substrate—the surface receiving the tile—then comb it into parallel ridges with a notched trowel. Where appropriate, we also back-butter the tiles by applying mortar to their backs before setting them.
We lift a tile to check the mortar coverage underneath. In wet areas, we check for at least 95% coverage. This lets us inspect the contact beneath the tile rather than judge the installation only by its finished face.
Surface-preparation pricing
Surface preparation costs $1–$5 per square foot. That is the preparation price, not a complete shower tile installation price. Use it to budget for that portion of the work rather than treating it as the total.

Cape Girardeau code and floodplain requirements
We work under Cape Girardeau’s current residential construction code, the 2015 International One- and Two-Family Residential Code.
Before starting, check the city’s flood map. For a property in a mapped flood-hazard area, Cape Girardeau requires a floodplain development permit before a building is added to or altered.

How It Works
-
Reach Out
A two-minute call is enough to tell us what we're working with and what to check first.
-
We Take a Look
A tech inspects the problem in person — no guessing from photos, no drive-by quotes.
-
Written Estimate
We put the fix, the timeline, and the number on paper — take your time with it.
-
The Fix, Done Right
Our crew does the work, checks it, and leaves the site clean. You see everything we did.
Some of what that looks like in the field:
- Check shower-wall studs with a level and correct out-of-plane framing before installing backerboard.
- Apply waterproof sealant at board seams, inside corners, screw holes, and the tub-to-wall connection.

Straight Answers to Common Questions
What is the 1-3 rule for tile installation?
The 1-3 rule typically refers to offsetting tile joints by at least one-third of the tile length in each row to avoid weak straight lines and improve stability. It is most relevant with larger-format tiles where a 50% offset can highlight substrate unevenness. Always check manufacturer recommendations for your specific tile size and type.
What is the 3-4-5 rule for tiling?
The 3-4-5 rule uses the Pythagorean theorem to check that corners are square: measure 3 units along one wall and 4 units along the adjacent wall; the diagonal should measure exactly 5 units. This ensures the layout starts square and prevents tiles from running out of alignment across the room.
What is the average labor cost to install ceramic tile?
Tile installation labor typically ranges from $3 to $15 per square foot. The final price depends on tile size, pattern complexity, surface condition, and whether old tile removal or subfloor repairs are needed. Larger tiles or intricate layouts increase time and therefore cost.
